It's like the computer is just not 'seeing' it. I spent a lot of time researching on the forums and Internet, but most everyone seems to be having problems with getting it to read while it is showing somewhere on the computer. Unfortunately, I am not that far along; I am struggling just to get it to be detected so that I can find it somewhere on the PC.
I tried using the cable from the newer hard drive, but that did not make any difference. Transfer speed is pretty fast, considering that it is connected to the Network via Ethernet. I installed it, and now it is a headache. If you only want to share this drive over your LAN without needing to access it from another physical location your office, on vacation, etc.
You will be able to access it on your LAN by viewing your network computers. Overall Review: I have heard a lot of complaints regarding the fan noise.
For me, this has not been a problem at all. Being a network drive, you can move it to another location on your network, or just run more Cat5e cable to a new location, such as a closet. Just make sure that you have plenty of ventilation for the drive so it does not overheat. I understand that MioNet is for those who want to access their drive from miles away.
If it were not for by terrible experience with MioNet, I would have given this a 5. WD confirmed in email, "that is the maximum throughput that the enclosure's CPU can handle. Unless you don't mind setting up the backup to transfer overnight and probably at least a day , this is a very bad solution. Pros: This NAS works very well. This thing is user serviceable which is a good deal taking into consideration the price. Don't be drawn away by the negative reviews, this NAS works great.
I recommend that you don't use the provided software though. Overall this is a very good NAS, at a great affordable price. Cons: The only con i can think of is that the fan can be a bit noisy, and the activity light are pretty bright. Other then that, this is a great product.
Pros: - very good price for two GB drives - can configure drives as RAID-1 for redundancy or RAID-0 for twice the storage - has a fan to prevent overheating which is not anywhere near as loud as some reviewers have claimed - firmware upgrade was problem free and effortless to perform - included backup software can preform selective or full system backups automatically and at scheduled times though I have not tried to restore from these backups at this time - has a USB port for connecting a second external hard drive to it but not for connecting to a PC directly via USB - design is attractive and compact considering it contains two full size hard drives - boot time after plugging in the NAS is reasonable at less than a minute ish to access your files - 3 year manufacturer warranty.
Cons: - lights on front need to be interpreted to know what the device is trying to tell you - included sharing software is defective by design and should not be installed because it uses DRM to prevent sharing media files regardless if they are legal or not - the fan can get a little loud at times under heavy use so it should not be used where silence is required - unable to connect directly to a PC via USB thats why its a NAS - will be slower than a drive connected via eSATA, Firewire, or USB 2.
The NAS sits on a desk with a person who has not complained about noise from the fan at all. I was able to setup the drive using the web utility and never needed the sharing software. Even though I am not using the NAS to share files over the internet, by setting up a free DynDNS account and configuring the router correctly, the included sharing software would not be needed for that either.
The device did stop responding once after two weeks of use, but after unplugging it then plugging it back in it worked fine and has had no problems since then. I would have given this product a 5 and not a 4. Cons: Noisy fan. User guide inconsistency with actual setup screens would be nice to have a aprinted copy of the user manual instead of a PDF on CD. MioNet was down for over 24 hours when I first tried to install.
Poor functionality of user interface. For every drive you register, it lists: when the warranty expires, direct links to software and manuals for each drive, etc. I also own a GB WD drive bought over a year ago which is still working fine. Physical appearance. My old GB is all black with a high gloss finish. Every fingerprint is visible on my old drive. USB 3. Drive performance is good exceeds USB 2. I measured USB 2. All hard drives are faster when empty than full.
This is simply because the circumference of the Outside diameter OD of the disk is larger than the Inside diameter ID. Drive temperature was reasonable not fantastic. I measured 45C while writing GB to the drive ambient was 25C. Reformatting the drive e. You can either copy the software off before format, or download the software from the WD web page after format.
The drive includes the following software. You can choose what you want to install. Both drives passed all the WD diagnostics. The various WD software packages allow you to exploit many optional features of the drive. For example, you can set the Drive Sleep Timer duration of inactivity before the drive spins down , Password protect the drive, etc. Cons: 1. The up side is physical space savings and likely WD production cost. This also means you have no easy way to recover your data if the USB hardware only were to fail.
It wasn't a big problem since I could move the drive to another enclosure and install the drive directly into my PC to access my files. I was close, but did not deduct an Egg for this. The length of the USB cable is relatively short 16".
This is due in part because the drive obtains all power through USB. The up side is there is no need for a separate power cord or power supply which improves portability. WD does not include a case with the drive.
The manual softcopy pdf file on the drive refers you to WD web site to purchase accessories separately. I found it useful to purchase a case with an internal pocket to store the USB cable.
Overall Review: 1. Backup software. There are numerous Backup software solutions for PCs. I prefer to just "drag and drop" files from my PC to my various external drives I own many drives from different vendors. The down side is you must manage the backups yourself and remember to do them periodically. This is my own personal preference and why the focus of my review has been the hardware. Always remember any PC hardware can fail e. If you don't want to loose your your precious files, maintain at least two copies on different media.
Its unlikely both copies will fail simultaneously excluding a fire or flood. Focus your backup on the files you created yourself e. Most software and operating systems files can be restored from the original installation disks.
All hard drives have delicate moving parts inside. This WD drive is very portable while powered off, but never move any hard drive while its in use. Moving a drive while it is powered on can cause the drive to fail e.
